What is Science writing
Science writing
Technology has reached its zoom in today’s world. It has of course occupied every street and home. In such a world, it is essential that every world citizen must be aware of such technologies been involved. All the issues, results, report of the every new technology or scientific invention are needed to be displayed for all people around the globe. Science writers have the responsibility to bring in such light to the audiences.
What is Science writing?
Scientific writing is the result of a strong observation of the scientific inventions. The person who loves innovation and one who has the mind that eagerly waits for new information would involve in scientific writing. They are the one intended fro such writing. Journalists are also the one who love innovations. However, the fact is that they would not have any knowledge involved in the scientific invention. Just like Sexton in Deception Point. They might know the concept of innovation but no the technical and scientific details of that innovation. Hence, scientific writing would require skills than journalism. They must have a scientific background to understand the technical details.
Skills to Be Developed
Like all other writing scientific writing would also require certain skills that are to be developed. They would require additional skills to out the scientific documents. They require oral communication as well as written communication skills. One must remember that the persons who are going to revise the result of documents that scientific writing produces are both professionals and non-professionals who are not scientist. Scientific writers must know the tactfulness to communicate with a scientist and a non-scientist. It is his skill to develop interpersonal skills to take his points to both different extremes. Scientific writing does not easily succeed.
1. It requires a lot of analysis of the past conditions and inventions that were comparatively made at past.
2. One must compare the past with the present invention.
3. One must analyze the credibility of the present invention when compared to the past.
4. One must have the vision to foresee the future.
The main points to be noted are,
1. Strictly dishonest or partial writing must be avoided
2. Strictly no plagiarism must be involved
Severe penalties are involved when such breaches are found especially in scientific writing. All rules may be similar to other type of writing. However, when it comes to scientific writing the rules is completely strict enough to keep spinning of words away.
How to Begin?
To begin one could just o a course or undergo training for journalism. This would be the beginning point for any science writing. There are a lot of specifications or standard to acquire the skill. The National Council for Training of Journalists (NCTJ) is one of the councils to train people for journalism. Journalism starts by writing periodicals and journals. Later it moves to next level of improvement such as writing documents and articles for good newspapers. This is the same logic applied to scientific writing too. Then slowly this develops the writer to become a publisher in technical and science columns of newspapers and journals.
Generally, new comers are not directly tested to become editors though they may have enough skills to give out best. They initially start to be the sub-editors. Later learn experience and then go to editor post. Therefore, importance primarily is given to experience and not to the skill you learn. Scientific writers are first taught all details about sub-editing and activities involved in editing a well know journal. Sometimes such technical writing may be with a piece of audio or video clip being given. This video clip must involve shooting with at least three cameras to give out a good dimension of the scene. The document must be completely understood from all perspective. In addition, a description of the observed points could be made out in document easily.
Get Trained For Skills
There are a lot of training councils and organizations to train people in scientific writing. Training classes usually occur vocationally. National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) has been set up for training in journalism. These classes are conducted vocationally to train people in content writing, web publishing, newspaper publishing and many more. They are examined after every training session for the skills they have obtained. They are then ranked in their training issued certificates. This ranking plays a major role in almost all walks of scientific writing. Many of these training councils and organizations have link with very huge organizations that require scientific writers. Then it would easier for the writers to get into companies according to their performance with the organizations that are training them. Sometimes, the companies that require science writers themselves provide training. In such a case, the candidates must be blessed to get into work a soon as he completes his training extra-ordinarily with good performance.
Good science writing would involve skills like
• Thorough knowledge of all terms involved
• Thorough analysis of all mentioned points from science
• Objectivity in writing
• Careful analysis of all the keywords
• Clear, lucid, and vivid descriptions of all the points
• Never forgets to acknowledge sources
Communication: an Important Factor
In every writing profession, an important skill is communication. Communicating with the buyers effectively is the only key to great output. Especially this would be the dominant factor for scientific writing. One must be effective enough to communicate with the scientist so as to gather information from them and then retract the information gained to the public.
This is not simple enough as you think.
1. Communicating with the scientists is not a usual communication with a normal person. It requires skill to get your needed information right to the point in the limited time provided for communication. Such a skill though could occur in nature would require training.
2. Next great thing is to process the information obtained from them into a form that the public would feel easier to understand. There would be a lot of technical terms in the information obtained from the scientist in that case it is important to reframe the words into simple sentences to reach the public.
